How to Change Default User Account for Windows XP Mode
The idea of Windows XP Mode is generally welcomed by the industry and millions of Windows 7 RC users around the world.
Amid the good reception, some people complaint about the lacking of freedom over control of the whole virtualized Windows XP, the most fierce one of them being the lack of settings to change the default user account.
Well, that can be done easily.
First, fire up the Windows XP Mode, the Microsoft tailored virtual image of Windows XP Professional SP3 in essence.
Get into Control Panel, and fire up User Accounts.
Create a new account.
Then, open Run in start menu, type the following command within the dialogue.
control userpasswords2
Remove the default user account, User.
Restart the virtual machine, and the next time it start up, you will see such prompt.
Enter your username and password.
Voila! Who said that there is no easy way to change user account for Windows XP Mode, huh?

Two important points:
1. Make sure you create a password for the new user account. The article does not adequately emphasize the importance of this step.
2. WARNING: the “control userpasswords2″ step deletes the User (or XPMUser) account! You do NOT need to delete the account; you just have to delete the saved credentials for WinXP Mode. In fact, I would leave the account as-is until you have made sure everything works on the new account.
To delete the credentials: in the Windows XP Mode window’s toolbar, just click Tools and select Settings. Then click the Logon Credentials item in the list on the left, and click Delete Saved Credentials. Last, click OK and continue from the “Restart the virtual machine” step.
