Microsoft released Windows Vista Service Pack 2 RC to MSDN/TechNet
The latest news from Microsoft Windows blog,
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 RC, which had been made available to Microsoft Connect a week ago, now has been released to MSDN/TechNet. Subscribers can start their download immediately.
Microsoft also implied in Windows Vista blog that sometime in recent future, they will provide open test of this RC to the public to prepare for the only milestone left, the RTM.
Service Pack 2 is a unified service pack, like Service Pack 1, which could apply to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, thanks to their consistent core under the hood, Microsoft’s new product strategy to offer more convenience for maintenance.
There are 691 fixes altogether in RC phase in Service Pack 2, and more fixes will be added on its road to RTM. However, Windows Vista SP2 will never act like Windows XP SP2, which had brought about radiant changes, instead it is just a regular service pack whose most imminent purpose is to provide a pack of hotfixes. Some minor function updates exist though, like support for Bluetooth 2.1, that won’t substantially change its property.
Many people doubt whether it’s worth the effort to update to SP2 when Windows 7 is about to enter RC phase and will very possibly be finished within this year.
Well, actually, many people will start thinking about deploying an OS only after it reached SP1 with the thought that only when it got SPed, the OS is truly mature, a theory that was well proven by the unfortunate Windows Vista. For these people, Windows Vista SP2 is a much better and safer choice.
And for those who had been enjoying Windows Vista, me of course included, SP2 is a great update, of course.
